ESI Registration Process for Employers: Step by Step

Establishments with 10 or more employees (20 in some states) must register under the Employees' State Insurance Act within 15 days of becoming liable. ESI covers employees earning gross wages up to Rs 21,000 a month, and Rs 25,000 for employees with disability.

Check applicability

ESI applies at 10 or more employees in most states. Only employees drawing gross wages up to Rs 21,000 a month are covered, but the headcount for coverage counts all employees.

Prepare documents

Keep the registration certificate of the establishment, PAN, address proof, bank details, the employee list with wages and dates of joining, and the digital signature ready.

Register on the ESIC portal

Sign up on the ESIC portal, complete Employer Registration Form 1 with establishment and employee details, and submit with the supporting documents.

Receive the code and insure employees

On approval you get a 17-digit employer code. Register each covered employee to generate their Insurance Number and issue the ESIC family photo identity (Pehchan) details.

Contribute and file returns

Deduct 0.75% of wages from the employee and add 3.25% as employer, deposit by the 15th of the following month, and file the half-yearly returns for the April to September and October to March periods.
