How to File the Monthly PF Return (ECR) on the EPFO Portal

Employers file PF contributions each month through the Electronic Challan cum Return, or ECR, on the EPFO employer portal, and deposit the amount by the 15th of the following month. The ECR replaces the older paper returns.

Prepare the wage data

For each member, compute PF wages (basic plus DA), the employee's 12%, the employer's 12% split into EPF and the 8.33% pension share up to the wage ceiling, and any admin charges.

Log in to the employer portal

Sign in to the EPFO Unified Employer Portal with your establishment ID and password and open the ECR upload section.

Upload the ECR text file

Prepare the ECR file in the prescribed format with each member's UAN, wages and contributions, and upload it. The portal validates the file and shows a summary.

Generate the challan

Verify the totals, generate the Temporary Return Reference Number and the challan, and confirm the contribution amounts are correct.

Pay by the 15th

Pay the challan online through the approved banks by the 15th of the following month. Late payment attracts interest and damages.

Frequently asked questions
