How to Register Under the Shops and Establishment Act

Almost every commercial establishment, shop, office, hotel or restaurant, must register under the Shops and Establishment Act of the state where it operates, usually within 30 days of starting. The Act is state-specific, so exact forms and fees vary.

Identify your state's rule

Each state administers its own Shops and Establishment Act through the local labour department or municipal authority. Apply in the state and locality where the establishment is located.

Apply within 30 days

Most states require registration within 30 days of commencing business. Apply online through the state labour portal where available.

Submit the documents

Typically you need proof of the establishment's address, the employer's identity and PAN, details of employees, and the nature of business, with the prescribed fee based on employee count.

Receive the registration certificate

On approval you get a registration certificate, which many banks and platforms ask for as proof of a legitimate business, and which you should display at the premises.

Renew and update

Renew the registration as your state requires and update it when key details change, such as the number of employees, address or nature of business.
