What is Gross Salary?

Gross salary is your total salary before deductions, made up of basic pay and all allowances, but after removing the employer's own contributions from CTC.

How Gross Salary works

To reach the gross from CTC, subtract the parts of CTC that are the employer's cost and not paid to you in cash, mainly the employer PF and the gratuity provision. From the gross, statutory deductions such as your PF, professional tax and income tax are then taken to arrive at the net or in-hand salary.

Example. On a ₹6,00,000 CTC with about ₹36,000 of employer PF and gratuity, the gross salary is roughly ₹5,64,000 a year, or ₹47,000 a month.

Why Gross Salary matters

Gross salary is the base on which income tax and many deductions are computed, so understanding it helps you check whether your payslip and tax are correct.

Gross salary versus CTC and net

Gross salary sits in the middle of the pay stack. It is larger than your net pay because statutory deductions (your EPF share, professional tax and TDS) have not yet been taken out, and smaller than your CTC because the employer's own contributions (its EPF share, gratuity provision, insurance) are not part of it. Formally, gross = basic + HRA + all allowances + any bonus, before deductions. It is the figure most compliance calculations key off: HRA exemption, professional tax slabs and the ESI wage ceiling are all tested against gross monthly wages, not CTC. When a landlord, bank or visa office asks for your salary, they usually mean gross, because it is the stable pre-deduction number that does not swing month to month the way net pay can when a large TDS instalment or arrear lands.

Frequently asked questions

Is gross salary before or after tax?

Before. Gross salary is calculated before income tax and other deductions; what remains after those deductions is the net or in-hand salary.

Does gross salary include PF?

Gross salary includes the components that make up your pay, but the employer PF is excluded, and your own PF is deducted from the gross to reach net salary.
