What is UAN (Universal Account Number)?

The Universal Account Number (UAN) is a permanent 12-digit number that links all your Provident Fund accounts across every employer.

How UAN (Universal Account Number) works

When you first join a PF-covered job, EPFO issues a UAN. At each new job, your new PF account is linked to the same UAN, so you can view all balances, transfer funds online and withdraw without a fresh number each time. You activate it once on the EPFO portal with your Aadhaar and mobile.

Example. If you change jobs three times, all three PF accounts sit under one UAN, letting you transfer the balance to your latest account in a few clicks.

Why UAN (Universal Account Number) matters

The UAN turns PF from a scattered set of accounts into a single portable retirement record, which is why keeping it activated and KYC-updated matters.

Keeping your UAN active and portable

The value of the UAN comes from keeping it activated and its KYC up to date. Once you activate it on the EPFO portal with your Aadhaar, PAN and bank details, you can view every linked PF account, raise an online transfer when you switch jobs, and file a withdrawal claim without your ex-employer's involvement. If the KYC is incomplete, transfers and withdrawals stall, which is the most common reason PF gets stuck when people change jobs. Because the UAN stays the same for life, you should never let a new employer create a fresh one; instead share your existing UAN so the new PF account links to it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my UAN?

It is printed on your payslip or PF statement, and your employer can provide it; you can also trace it on the EPFO portal using your PF member ID.

Do I get a new UAN when I change jobs?

No. The UAN is permanent; only a new PF member account is created and linked to your existing UAN.
