How an OD request works

The employee raises an OD request, ideally before the day, with the date, timing, place and purpose. The reporting manager approves it, and in many companies HR also checks it because it replaces an attendance punch. Once approved, the day is treated like a normal working day. Some firms ask for supporting proof after the visit, such as a client visit report, a courier receipt or a training attendance sheet.

On duty versus work from home and leave

OD, WFH and leave are easy to confuse. OD means working away from the office on official business, usually out in the field. Work from home means doing the regular job from home. Leave means not working at all. Keeping them separate matters for reports: a sales team with many OD days is doing its job, while a back-office team with many OD days deserves a closer look.
