What is Flexi Time? Meaning, Rules and Example

Flexi time is a working arrangement that lets employees choose when they start and finish their day, within limits set by the company, as long as they work the required hours. Most flexi time policies also fix core hours in the middle of the day when everyone must be available.

How flexi time works

A typical flexi policy sets a window for arrival, such as 8 am to 11 am, a minimum of eight working hours plus a one-hour lunch, and core hours, such as 11 am to 4 pm. An employee who arrives at 8 am can leave at 5 pm; one who arrives at 10:30 am stays until 7:30 pm. Lateness works differently too: the employee is late only if they miss the core hours or fall short of the required hours, not because they arrived after 9 am.

Flexi time versus core hours and WFH

Flexi time is about when you work; work from home is about where you work. Core hours are the fixed block inside flexi time. A company can offer flexi time with no WFH, WFH with fixed timings, or both. Flexi time also differs from a compressed week, which changes how many days are worked each week rather than the daily start and finish.

Keeping flexi time fair

Flexi time fails when some managers quietly ignore it, or when people stretch it into short days. In ZeniaHR, a flexible shift can have optional core hours and minimum hours, so the shift is defined by the hours to be worked rather than by a fixed start time.

Example: Content writers at Brightpath EdTech in Pune follow flexi time: arrive between 8 am and 11 am, work eight hours plus a one-hour lunch, and be available from 11 am to 4 pm. On Wednesday, 22 April 2026, writer Aditya Joshi started at 10:45 am after his daughter's school event and left at 7:50 pm. He covered the core hours and the required hours, so no late mark was recorded.

Frequently asked questions

What is flexi time in a company?

Flexi time is a policy that lets employees pick their own start and finish times within a set window, as long as they work the required hours and are present during core hours. For example, an employee might start any time between 8 am and 11 am and leave once they have completed eight working hours.

Is flexi time the same as flexible working?

Flexi time is one kind of flexible working. Flexible working is the broad umbrella that also covers work from home, hybrid work, part-time roles, compressed weeks and job sharing. Flexi time specifically means choosing your start and finish times within a set window while still working the required hours.
