What is a General Shift? Meaning and Example

A general shift is the standard daytime working shift of an organization, typically running from around 9 am to 6 pm or 9:30 am to 6:30 pm on working days. It is followed by office staff, administration and most employees who do not work in rotating operational shifts.

How the general shift fits with other shifts

In a plant, hospital or warehouse, the general shift sits alongside the operating shifts. Production may run morning, evening and night shifts, while HR, accounts, purchase and the plant head's office work the general shift. Supervisors often overlap both, arriving before the general shift to take the morning handover. In a pure office business, the general shift may be the only shift, with a few support staff on earlier or later timings.

What the general shift definition should include

These details drive late marks, half days and overtime, so they must match what employees were told in their appointment terms. A mismatch, such as a 9 am start in the system but 9:30 am in the offer letter, creates late marks that nobody deserves. ZeniaHR comes with a default General shift of 9 to 6, alongside Morning, Evening and Night shifts, and all of them can be edited.

Example: Pink City Cement Traders in Jaipur runs a general shift from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, Monday to Saturday, with a one-hour unpaid lunch and a 10-minute grace. Accounts assistant Bhavna Chauhan punched in at 9:37 am on Monday, 6 April 2026, and was marked on time. When the company moved the general shift to 10 am to 7 pm from 1 June 2026, HR changed the shift once and everyone on it moved together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the timing of a general shift?

Each company sets its own timing, but a general shift usually covers normal office hours, such as 9 am to 6 pm or 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, with a lunch break. It is called general because it applies to most staff who are not on rotating operational shifts. Your appointment letter or the attendance policy will state the exact hours.

What is the difference between a general shift and a day shift?

In many workplaces they mean nearly the same thing. The difference is context: general shift usually means the standard office timing followed by administration and staff functions, while day shift or morning shift is one of the operating shifts in a two-shift or 24-hour operation, which may start much earlier, such as 6 am.
