How half-day leave works
The employee applies for the first-half or second-half session of a date. On a 9 am to 6 pm shift, the first half might run from 9 am to 1:30 pm and the second half from 1:30 pm to 6 pm, depending on where the lunch break sits. The leave type decides whether half days are allowed: casual and sick leave usually allow them, while some companies do not allow half-day earned leave or comp off. Attendance then expects the employee only for the other half.
Half-day leave versus a half day in attendance
A half day in attendance is what the system records when someone works only part of the day, for example arriving very late or leaving early. Half-day leave is a request made by the employee. If an employee who arrived at 2 pm had applied for first-half leave, the day is complete: half leave and half present. If not, the morning is uncovered and may be treated as half a day of loss of pay.
Rules to set
Half-day rules are simple to write and save many small disputes. In ZeniaHR, leave applications support first-half and second-half sessions, each leave type states whether half days are allowed, and the Leave Calendar shows half days as half.

Can I take half-day leave from earned leave?
It depends on your company's leave policy. Many companies allow half days for casual and sick leave, since those cover short needs, but some do not allow earned leave in half days because it is meant for planned longer breaks. The leave application screen or the leave policy should show which leave types allow half days.
How is half-day leave counted in the balance?
It is counted as 0.5 day. If you have 4 days of casual leave and take half a day, your balance becomes 3.5 days. Two half-day leaves on different dates together count as one full day. Half-day leave does not reduce pay, because you work the other half and the leave half is paid from your balance.
