How remote work differs from WFH and hybrid
Three arrangements get mixed up. Work from home is an occasional exception in an office-based job, usually approved day by day. Hybrid work is a fixed weekly mix of office and remote days. Remote work has no office days by default: the job is set up to run from the employee's location, often with no desk allocated at all. A Bengaluru company might employ a remote developer in Indore who comes to Bengaluru twice a year for planning. The appointment letter should say which arrangement applies and name the place of work.
HR questions remote work raises
The first question matters more than it seems: an employee living in another state can change which state's rules apply to some items, such as professional tax, so confirm with your payroll and compliance adviser before hiring remotely across states.
- Which state's professional tax and establishment rules apply
- What equipment, internet and ergonomic support the company provides
- How data security and device use are managed
- How attendance is recorded without an office punch
- How travel to the office for meetings is paid
Making remote teams work
Remote teams need clearer written communication, core hours for overlap, and regular one-to-one conversations with the manager. Measure outcomes, not screen time, and bring people together in person a few times a year. ZeniaHR's work terms policy can set work from home as the default work model, and remote employees can punch in and out from the mobile app, with the location recorded at each punch.

Is remote work the same as work from home?
Not quite. A remote employee's regular place of work is their home or another agreed location, usually written into the appointment letter, so there is nothing to apply for day by day. Work from home is an exception granted on top of an office-based job, often limited to a few days a month. The difference shows up in expense, equipment and office travel rules.
How do companies track attendance for remote employees?
Most use app or web punches at the start and end of the day, and some ask for break punches too. For remote roles, output-based tracking through project tools and regular check-ins matters more than punch times. The attendance policy should state how remote days are recorded, which core hours apply and how leave is applied, so remote staff are treated consistently.
