Training in startups

Startups rarely have a training team, and most learning happens on the job. That is fine for skills, but a few things should not be left to chance: product knowledge for anyone who talks to customers, data security for anyone who touches customer data, and POSH awareness once the Internal Committee exists. Track those few programs properly, and treat the rest as a learning budget people spend on what helps them grow.

What even a 15-person startup should run

Three programs cover most of the risk. POSH awareness, because an Internal Committee is needed once the workplace has 10 or more employees and people should know how it works. Data security and privacy basics, because one careless export of customer data can cost a startup its largest client. And a product certification for sales and support, so nobody promises a feature that does not exist. Set each up in the Learning module as a mandatory program with hours and a validity period, and enrol everyone who needs it.

Role onboarding tracks

A new engineer, a new sales hire and a new support agent need different first months. Build a short track for each as a blended program: recorded walkthroughs, a few sessions with senior people and a practical test at the end. For support, the test might be answering 20 real tickets with a reviewer beside them. When the track is complete, mark it done; ZeniaHR gives each completion a certificate number and an expiry date, which helps when the product changes enough that people need to redo the track.

Learning budgets and reimbursements

A yearly learning budget for courses, books or conference tickets is a simple perk that small teams can afford. ZeniaHR has no expense claim workflow, so collect receipts outside the system and let HR add approved amounts as a reimbursement input in that month's payroll. Record the external courses as external programs with their hours, so at year end you can see what the team actually learned, not only what it cost.

Keeping the records useful

Training records matter at three moments: a client security questionnaire, an investor's due diligence and an internal complaint. Each time someone asks who was trained, on what and when. The compliance view per program answers that on one screen, with the statuses assigned, in progress, completed, waived and expired. Use waived sparingly and note the reason, for example an experienced hire who completed the same course at a previous employer last year.

How to set it up in ZeniaHR

  1. Create mandatory programs for POSH awareness, data security and product certification with hours and validity.
  2. Build a blended onboarding track for each main role and enrol every new joiner in theirs.
  3. Record external courses bought from the learning budget as external programs with their hours.
  4. Add approved course fees as reimbursement inputs in payroll, keeping receipts outside ZeniaHR.
  5. Check the compliance view per program each quarter and follow up with anyone not completed.

Frequently asked questions

What training should a small startup provide?

At minimum, a role onboarding track for every new joiner, product training for anyone who speaks to customers, data security basics, and POSH awareness once the company has an Internal Committee. Beyond that, a learning budget lets people choose courses that suit them. Keep records of the mandatory training so you can show who completed what, and when.

How can startups track employee training without an LMS?

Use the HR system's training records instead of a separate platform. In ZeniaHR, the Learning module holds programs with hours, a mandatory flag and validity, enrolments with statuses, and certificate numbers on completion. The content itself can live anywhere, from recorded videos to live sessions; what matters is recording who completed it.

How should a startup handle learning budget reimbursements?

Set a yearly amount per person, agree what it covers and ask for receipts. Approved amounts are then paid through payroll. In ZeniaHR, HR enters each approved amount as that month's reimbursement input. Employees do not file claims in the system, so keep receipts and approvals together in a shared folder.
