Minimum wage for security guards in Karnataka (2026-27)

Rates effective 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027 · last updated 13 August 2026

In Karnataka, security guards are paid under the Security Agency scheduled employment, not the general shops rate. A plain guard without arms is classed semi-skilled; peons and helpers are un-skilled; supervisors and guards with arms are skilled; and security officers are highly-skilled. Each rate is a basic wage plus a Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA) and varies across the state's four zones.

A security guard without arms is classed semi-skilled and earns about ₹730.64 per day, roughly ₹18,997 a month, in Zone I (Bengaluru), effective 1 April 2026, including VDA of ₹125.17 per day. These figures come from the Karnataka Labour Department schedule, shown per day, exactly as notified, as a basic wage plus a Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA).

How Karnataka sets this minimum wage

Karnataka fixes minimum wages under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, separately for each scheduled employment. There is no single flat state-wide rate: the figure depends on the worker's employment, skill category and the zone where they work. Every wage is a basic wage plus a Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA).

The VDA is revised every year, effective 1 April, based on the state Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers. The basic rate changes only when a fresh notification is issued for that scheduled employment. The rates on this page apply for 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027.

What employers must do

For a staffing or security agency deploying guards across Bengaluru and district sites, the right rate depends on each guard's skill category and the zone of the posting. Guards with arms and supervisors must be paid the skilled rate, not the semi-skilled guard rate. Overtime is paid at twice the ordinary rate, and the VDA revision each 1 April must flow into payroll so no guard drops below the new minimum.

For contractors and staffing firms deploying security guards across Karnataka, keeping every worker on the right schedule and skill rate by hand is error-prone. ZeniaHR payroll checks each worker's wage against the applicable state minimum automatically and handles the registers and PF/ESI returns.
