Weekly off patterns in India
The pattern follows the business. A store open all week cannot give everyone Sunday, so it spreads weekly offs across the team and publishes them in the roster. Whatever the pattern, the weekly rest that must be given depends on the law covering the establishment, such as the state's Shops and Establishments rules, so check it before designing the roster.
- Sunday only, seen in many factories and small businesses
- Saturday and Sunday, usual in IT and corporate offices
- Every Sunday plus the second and fourth Saturday, as in banks and some offices
- Alternate Saturdays, rotated between two halves of a team
- A fixed weekday off per person, such as Tuesday, in retail and hotels
- A rotating off day that moves with the shift roster
Weekly off and pay
For monthly-salaried staff, weekly offs are paid days: a ₹30,000 monthly salary already covers them. Questions arise when an employee is absent on both sides of a weekly off, because some companies then treat the off day as unpaid too under a sandwich rule. When an employee works on a weekly off, the company usually gives a comp off or pays overtime, based on which rules cover that employee and what the policy says.
Managing weekly offs in a roster
Weekly offs should be set once in the shift or roster, not typed in by hand every week. In ZeniaHR, each shift has a weekly off pattern, including Saturday rules such as 1st and 3rd, 2nd and 4th, 2nd, 4th and 5th, or alternate Saturdays, and an employee can also have a personal weekly off. Shift swaps can include weekly offs.

Is a weekly off paid in India?
For monthly-salaried employees, weekly offs fall within the month and are covered by the monthly salary. For daily-rated workers, whether the weekly off is paid depends on the applicable wage rules and the terms of employment. Check your state's rules and your standing orders, because a missed weekly off can change what is owed.
Can a company change an employee's weekly off?
Yes, companies change weekly offs through the roster, especially in shift-based work, but it should be done with reasonable notice and without leaving the employee without a weekly rest day. Frequent last-minute changes hurt morale and can conflict with the weekly holiday rules that apply to the establishment. Publish rosters in advance and use a shift swap process for changes employees ask for.
