What is Marriage Leave? Meaning and Example

Marriage leave is paid time off for an employee's own wedding, and in some companies for the wedding of a child or sibling. It is a company policy benefit, typically a few working days, usually available once during employment and often after completing a minimum period of service.

How marriage leave is usually set up

Policies often give three to seven working days for the employee's own wedding, to be taken around the wedding date, sometimes with a minimum service condition such as six months or confirmation. Some allow one or two days for the wedding of a child or sibling. The employee applies in advance with the wedding date, and many join marriage leave with earned leave for travel or a honeymoon, where the policy allows the two to be combined.

Why marriage leave rules need detail

Indian weddings stretch over several days of functions, often in a hometown far from work, so long leave around a wedding is common. A clear policy says how many days count as marriage leave, whether it can be combined with earned leave, how much notice is needed, and whether it can be split. It also settles the question of proof, which most companies handle simply with an invitation card or a marriage certificate later.

Setting up marriage leave

Set marriage leave up as a separate leave type with written rules, rather than as a favour each manager grants differently. In ZeniaHR, such a leave type can require a minimum period of service, set a notice period, cap the days in one application and, if the policy wants, stop it from being joined with named leave types. Before submitting, the employee sees exactly which days will be charged and what balance remains, so the wedding plan holds no surprises.

Example: Gurleen Kaur, an accounts officer at a Chandigarh hospital that works Monday to Saturday, married on Sunday, 22 February 2026. The hospital gives five working days of marriage leave after confirmation. She applied in January for marriage leave on 19, 20, 21, 23 and 24 February, with the Sunday as her weekly off, and added earned leave from 25 to 28 February. Her manager approved both, and she rejoined on Monday, 2 March.

Frequently asked questions

How many days of marriage leave do companies give?

It varies by company. Many policies give three to seven working days for the employee's own wedding, with a minimum service condition such as confirmation, and a few also give a day or two for the wedding of a child or sibling. Where there is no marriage leave, employees usually combine casual and earned leave, so plan and apply early.

Can marriage leave be taken more than once?

Most policies allow marriage leave only once during employment with that company, for the employee's own wedding. Leave for a family member's wedding, where offered, is usually a separate and smaller allowance. If an employee remarries during their employment, the policy wording decides, as some companies allow it again and others do not.
