How shift allowance is paid
Companies use one of two methods. A per-shift allowance pays a fixed sum, such as ₹150 for every evening shift worked, so it moves with the roster. A monthly allowance pays a flat amount to anyone assigned to rotating shifts that month, whatever the exact mix. Per-shift payment is fairer when rosters vary a lot, while a monthly amount is simpler when the whole team rotates the same way. The amount is a company decision, or part of a settlement with the union where one exists.
Shift allowance, night allowance and overtime
Shift allowance is the broad term for pay linked to off-hours shifts. A night shift allowance is a specific, usually higher, payment for shifts that cover the night. Some companies pay both: a small amount for evening shifts and a larger one for nights. Neither replaces overtime. Time worked past the prescribed hours counts as overtime and is paid at double the ordinary wage rate, on top of any shift allowance, under the working hours and overtime rules.
Paying it correctly
Count qualifying shifts from finalized attendance, not from the planned roster, because swaps, leave and absences change who actually worked each shift. Show the allowance as its own line on the payslip. Because it is part of total remuneration, include it when you check the 50 percent wage rule under the Code on Wages, which can affect the PF, gratuity and bonus base.

Is shift allowance part of gross salary?
Yes. When it is paid, shift allowance forms part of the employee's gross earnings for the month and appears as a separate line on the payslip. Because it is part of total remuneration, it also matters when checking whether basic pay plus dearness allowance is at least half of the total under the Code on Wages.
Is shift allowance paid for leave days?
Usually not, when it is paid per shift, because the allowance compensates for actually working the shift. When it is a fixed monthly amount, companies often pay it in full or reduce it in proportion to days absent. The policy should say which, so that employees on rotating shifts know what to expect when they take leave.
