What is Night Shift Allowance? Meaning and Example

Night shift allowance is an extra payment for working a shift that covers the night hours, such as a shift from 10 pm to 6 am. It recognizes the strain of night work on sleep, health and family life, and is usually paid for each night shift actually worked.

Which shifts qualify

The policy has to define a night shift precisely, because many shifts touch the night. A common approach is to pay the allowance when a set number of hours, such as four or more, fall between 10 pm and 6 am. An evening shift from 2 pm to 10 pm then does not qualify, while a 10 pm to 6 am shift does. For shifts that cross midnight, attendance should file the shift to the day it started, so a night shift beginning on Friday is counted as Friday's shift.

Women on night shifts and duty of care

Women may work night shifts with their consent and under the safety conditions set by the government, as covered in the rules on women and night shifts. In practice that means recorded consent, safe transport and security arrangements that meet the notified conditions. The allowance does not replace any of this. Employers also help night staff with a hot meal, a place to rest during breaks and predictable rosters.

Paying the allowance correctly

Most mistakes come from the roster changing after it was published. A night shift swapped between two nurses must be paid to the nurse who actually worked it. In ZeniaHR, shifts carry a night shift flag, and shifts that cross midnight are filed to the shift's day, which keeps each night on the right date when HR counts nights worked for the allowance.

Example: Sister Mary Joseph, a staff nurse at a Kochi hospital, was rostered for the 10 pm to 6 am night shift on 10, 11, 12, 20 and 21 September 2026. On 19 September a colleague took her shift of the 21st in an approved shift swap. Mary worked four night shifts, and at ₹300 per night she received ₹1,200 as night shift allowance with her September salary.

Frequently asked questions

How much is night shift allowance in India?

There is no single rate. Each employer sets its own amount, either per night shift or as a monthly sum, and in some industries it is agreed with the union. What matters is that the policy states the amount, which shifts qualify, and whether it is paid for shifts worked or rostered. It is paid on top of salary and any overtime.

Can women employees work night shifts?

Yes. Women may work night shifts with their consent and under the safety conditions set by the government, such as safe transport and security at the workplace. Consent should be recorded in writing and respected in the roster. Check the notified conditions for your state before rostering women on night shifts.
