Frequently asked questions

What does an academic coordinator do in a school?

An academic coordinator plans and monitors teaching for a group of classes. They break the syllabus into monthly plans, check lesson plans and notebooks, observe teachers, schedule tests and PTMs, analyse results and organize remedial support. They also arrange substitution and mentor new teachers in their wing.

Is an academic coordinator a teacher?

Usually yes. Most schools pick coordinators from experienced teachers and let them keep a reduced teaching load in their subject. The coordination work takes the rest of their time, but teaching a few periods keeps them credible when they observe and advise other teachers.

What is the difference between an academic coordinator and a vice principal?

An academic coordinator looks after teaching quality for one wing or set of classes. The vice principal runs the whole school's daily operations, including timetable, discipline and exams, and supervises all the coordinators. Coordinators report to the vice principal, who reports to the principal.
