A Blood Bank Technician works in a hospital or standalone blood bank. They help the medical officer screen donors, collect and separate blood into components, test every unit for blood group and infections, cross-match units for patients and issue them to wards. Key responsibilities
- Assist donor registration and screening, checking haemoglobin, weight, blood pressure and questionnaire answers under the medical officer.
- Collect whole blood with blood bags and mixers, watch donors for reactions, and label bags and sample tubes correctly.
- Separate packed red cells, fresh frozen plasma and platelet concentrate using the refrigerated centrifuge and plasma expressor.
- Test every unit for blood group and screen for HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis and malaria before release.
- Perform grouping, antibody screening and cross-matching for patient requests, and resolve discrepancies with the medical officer.
- Store components at their set temperatures, keep refrigerator, freezer and platelet agitator logs, and rotate stock by expiry.
- Issue units against requisitions, confirm patient identity details with ward staff, and record every issue.
- Maintain donor, testing, component and issue registers, and discard expired or reactive units by the set procedure.
- Support donation camps with setup, collection and transport of units in validated cold boxes.
- Report transfusion reactions to the medical officer and run the laboratory work-up.
