Frequently asked questions

What does a head of compensation and benefits do?

A head of compensation and benefits designs and runs the company's pay system. That covers grades and salary ranges, CTC structures, the annual increment budget, variable pay and incentives, group insurance and other benefits, and exceptions such as above-range offers. The role balances market competitiveness, internal fairness and cost.

What skills are needed for a compensation and benefits role?

Strong Excel and financial modelling come first, followed by job evaluation, salary benchmarking and incentive design. Knowledge of Indian statutory pay rules, such as PF, gratuity, bonus and the Labour Codes wage definition, is essential. Senior C&B roles also need the ability to explain numbers simply to leaders and to keep salary data confidential.

How does the Labour Codes wage definition affect salary structures?

Under the Code on Wages, basic pay plus dearness allowance must be at least half of total remuneration. Allowances above that line are added back to wages, which raises the base for PF, gratuity and bonus. C&B teams restructure CTC so that the basic and DA share is compliant and the added cost is budgeted.
