Frequently asked questions

What does a hospital director do?

A hospital director leads the entire hospital: finances, specialities, quality and staff. They set the budget and service standards, approve major equipment, keep accreditation and licences valid, and answer to the board or trust for growth and patient safety. Clinical, nursing, operations and finance heads report to the director, who takes the final call on serious issues.

What qualifications does a hospital director need in India?

Most hospital directors in India are doctors, MBBS often with an MD or MS, who add a master's in hospital administration or an MBA in healthcare. Many years in hospital operations and senior leadership matter more than any single degree. A background in quality or NABH accreditation helps for large multi-speciality hospitals.

What is the difference between a hospital director and a medical superintendent?

A hospital director runs the whole hospital as a business, including finance, growth and non-clinical operations. A medical superintendent heads the clinical side: doctors, clinical departments, medical quality and clinical compliance. In many Indian hospitals the medical superintendent reports to the director, who holds final accountability to the board.
