Frequently asked questions

What does a medical superintendent do?

A medical superintendent heads a hospital's clinical services and medical administration. They oversee clinical departments, build doctor duty rosters, run mortality and complaint reviews, manage medico-legal cases and lead the clinical side of NABH. They link the consultants and hospital management, and take decisions on clinical staffing, protocols and discipline under the director.

What is the difference between a medical superintendent and a hospital administrator?

A medical superintendent is a doctor who runs the clinical side: doctors, protocols, clinical quality and medico-legal work. A hospital administrator runs the non-clinical side: facilities, support services, vendors and general operations. Both usually report to the hospital director, and they work closely so clinical and non-clinical services stay aligned.

What qualifications does a medical superintendent need?

A medical superintendent needs an MBBS with a postgraduate qualification such as an MD, MS or diploma, and registration with the state medical council. Many add a degree or diploma in hospital administration. Several years of clinical practice plus experience in medical administration are expected before the role.
