Frequently asked questions

What does a module lead do?

A module lead owns one module of a software application and leads the developers working on it. They break work into tasks, write low-level designs, code the complex parts, review every pull request, coordinate with other modules, fix or assign defects and report progress to the technical lead. The module's quality and delivery are their responsibility.

What is the difference between a module lead and a technical lead?

A module lead is responsible for one module and a small group of developers. A technical lead is responsible for the technical direction of a whole project or team, covering several modules, architecture decisions, standards and client technical discussions. In Indian IT services firms the module lead role is usually the step before technical lead.

How many years of experience does a module lead need?

Most module leads in Indian IT companies have 5 to 8 years of development experience. The promotion usually comes when an engineer has shown they can own a feature end to end, review other people's code well and guide juniors, rather than on reaching a set number of years.
