Frequently asked questions

What does a program manager do?

A program manager coordinates several related projects that together deliver a business outcome. They set the program plan and budget, appoint and guide project managers, manage dependencies and risks, run steering committees, control changes and measure whether the promised benefits arrive after go-live.

What is the difference between a program manager and a project manager?

A project manager delivers one piece of work with a fixed scope and end date. A program manager oversees several connected projects and is responsible for the overall benefit, such as savings or revenue, not only for tasks being completed. Project managers usually report to the program manager.

Which certifications help a program manager in India?

PMP from PMI is the most widely recognised in India, and PgMP is the program-level certificate for experienced managers. PRINCE2 and MSP are common in companies with UK or European links. Employers still weigh a track record of delivered programs more than the certificate itself.
