Training for college faculty and staff

College training covers more than teaching skills. Faculty attend faculty development programmes, orientation and refresher courses and workshops in their field, which also count in promotion and accreditation. Lab staff need chemical, electrical and equipment safety. Everyone needs to know the exam malpractice rules, anti-ragging duties and the POSH process. Good practice records every programme with its hours and any validity, so HoDs and the IQAC can see who has done what without chasing certificates.

Faculty development that counts

Faculty development programmes, short-term courses, and orientation and refresher programmes for college teachers form the core of faculty training. Many career advancement and accreditation processes give credit for them, so the college needs a record of each programme attended, its duration and the certificate. Plan the year in July: which faculty attend which external programmes in the semester break, and which in-house workshops the college runs on outcome-based teaching, research methods or new lab software.

Safety and compliance training on campus

Chemistry, biotechnology and engineering labs need safety training for lab staff and faculty before the first practical of the year: chemical handling and storage, fire extinguishers, electrical safety and first aid. Workshop instructors need machine guarding and emergency stop drills. Hostel wardens need first aid and emergency response. Every staff member needs a session on the POSH policy and the Internal Committee, on the anti-ragging duties your college assigns, and on the exam malpractice procedure before they invigilate.

Tracking hours, certificates and expiry

Record each programme with its hours, its type and whether it is mandatory. External FDP certificates rarely expire, but safety and first aid training should be repeated on a cycle your policy sets, such as every one or two years, so give those programmes a validity in months. At the start of each semester, the IQAC coordinator or HR can list faculty with no development hours in the past year and lab staff whose safety training has lapsed, and plan the semester's sessions around them.

How to set it up in ZeniaHR

  1. In Learning, create programmes for FDPs, in-house workshops, lab safety, first aid, POSH and exam procedures, and mark safety and POSH as mandatory.
  2. Set each programme's type, such as external for FDPs and classroom for lab safety, with hours and a validity in months where refreshers are needed.
  3. Enrol faculty and staff by department or role, and follow statuses from assigned to in progress and completed.
  4. When faculty return with an FDP certificate or finish an in-house session, mark the enrolment complete, which issues a certificate number with an expiry date.
  5. Open the compliance view per programme at the start of each semester to see who is expired or pending, and waive only with a reason.

Frequently asked questions

What is an FDP for college teachers?

A faculty development programme is a short structured course, often five days to two weeks, run by a college, university or training institute to update teachers on their subject, teaching methods, research or technology. Colleges record the FDPs each faculty member attends, with dates, hours and certificates, because promotion and accreditation processes often give credit for them.

What safety training do college lab staff need?

Lab staff need training in chemical handling and storage, fire extinguisher use, electrical safety and first aid, and workshop staff need machine safety and emergency stop drills. Repeat it on a fixed cycle, such as every year, and before new equipment is put to use. Faculty who supervise practicals should attend the same sessions.

How should a college track faculty training records?

Record each programme attended with its type, dates, hours and certificate on the faculty member's profile, and give safety programmes a validity so lapsed training shows up as expired. At the start of each semester, list faculty with no development activity in the past year and plan sessions for them. The IQAC can then draw training data from one place.
