Split shifts without the confusion
Casual and fine-dine outlets often run floor staff on a split day: 11:30 am to 3:30 pm for lunch service and 7:30 pm to 11:30 pm for dinner. That is 8 working hours spread over 12. Set it up in Shifts & Roster as a split shift with both work windows, so the roster and attendance expect two blocks of work and not one long day. Spread-over and intervals are fixed by government notification under the OSH Code, so confirm the spread-over allowed in your state before you design a 12-hour day around two services.
Take Imran, a steward at a Hyderabad outlet on that split shift. His punches read 11:36 am, 3:34 pm, 7:28 pm and 11:41 pm. The two windows give 3 hours 58 minutes and 4 hours 13 minutes, a total of 8 hours 11 minutes of work, with the afternoon gap outside his working time. His 6-minute late start sits inside a 10-minute grace, and the 11 minutes after 11:30 pm are well under a 30-minute overtime minimum, so the day is simply present and on time.
Kitchen and floor on different clocks
One outlet can have five start times: the central prep team at 7 am, commis cooks at 8 am, the tandoor at 10 am, the floor at 11:30 am and stewarding at 4 pm. Each needs its own shift with its own grace, because 15 minutes late costs different things at each station. A commis who arrives late delays the mise en place for lunch, while a dishwasher late at 4 pm still has an hour before dinner plates start piling up. Put grace on each shift, then keep one set of late rules for the company, for example a half day when someone is more than 45 minutes late, and half a day deducted for every three late marks after two free ones.
Punching where phones stay in lockers
Many kitchens keep phones out of the cooking area for hygiene, and fingerprint readers struggle with wet, floury or burnt fingers. Put the punch point at the staff entrance, before the locker room. A kiosk tablet there displays a fresh QR code every 30 seconds; staff scan it with the mobile app and then lock the phone away with their outdoor clothes. For a phone whose camera cannot read the code, the kiosk also shows a typed code. Tie the kiosk to the outlet's check-in spot, and each punch shows the person was at the outlet rather than on the way to it.
Late nights and missed punch-outs
The last punch of the day is the one most often missed, because the closing team leaves tired after midnight. ZeniaHR sends a missed punch-out alert 60 minutes after the shift ends, to the employee and the manager, so it can be fixed the next morning. Decide in the attendance rules what a missing punch-out means: a half day, an absence, or hours counted to the shift end, which is the fair choice for closing staff who did stay. A shift that crosses midnight is filed to the day it started, so a 4 pm to 1 am stewarding shift stays one duty on one date.
- Clear missed punch-outs from late closes within two days
- Approve pending corrections within the monthly limit
- List who worked a weekly off, for comp-off
- Hand HR a clean month before the last working day
How to set it up in ZeniaHR
- Set up each outlet as a branch and location, with the restaurant manager as reporting manager for its kitchen and floor staff.
- In Shifts & Roster, create prep, kitchen, floor split and stewarding shifts, and mark any shift that ends after midnight as a night shift.
- Place a kiosk at each outlet's staff entrance, tied to its check-in spot with the location check switched on.
- In the attendance rules, choose hours to shift end for a missing punch-out, then set late steps, free late marks and a monthly penalty cap.
- Keep late and missed punch-out alerts running for employees and outlet managers alike.
- Before month close, have outlet managers clear corrections in My Team, then finalize the month for payroll.

How do QSR outlets track crew attendance across shifts?
Roster each crew member on an opening, mid or closing shift, and judge each punch against that shift's start and grace. A kiosk at the staff entrance with a rotating QR code gives a quick punch at shift change without a queue at a fingerprint reader. Missed punch-out alerts catch closers who leave without punching, and the shift manager fixes gaps the next day.
What happens when a restaurant employee forgets to punch out after closing?
Your attendance rules decide. ZeniaHR can treat a missing punch-out as a half day, an absence, or hours counted to the shift end, and for closing staff the last option is usually fairest, since they did stay. An alert reaches the employee and the manager 60 minutes after shift end, and the employee can raise a missed check-out correction for approval.
Are split shifts allowed in Indian restaurants?
Split shifts are widely used, but total working hours and spread-over must stay within the limits. The OSH Code caps ordinary work at eight hours a day and leaves intervals, spread-over and weekly limits to government notification. Check the spread-over notified for your state before rostering an 11:30 am to 11:30 pm split day.
