Job title: Audit Associate
Department: CA and Consulting
Reports to: Audit Senior
Location: [City], [office, branch or site]
About the role
An Audit Associate executes audit procedures on an engagement under an audit senior. They test transactions and balances, prepare working papers, gather and file evidence, and draft sections of the audit file. It is a mid level role for someone who can work through a section largely on their own but does not yet lead the fieldwork. A good Audit Associate produces clean, well referenced working papers, spots the exceptions that matter, and needs little rework from the senior who reviews them.
Key responsibilities
- Perform the assigned audit procedures on transactions, balances and controls as set out in the audit programme.
- Vouch entries to source documents, verify balances, and test the operation of the client's controls.
- Prepare working papers that clearly show the procedure done, the evidence seen and the conclusion reached.
- Collect and organise audit evidence from the client, and follow up on documents that are pending.
- Draft assigned sections of the financial statements and the audit file for the senior's review.
- Flag exceptions, unusual items and control weaknesses to the senior with the supporting evidence.
- Perform ledger scrutiny and analytical checks to identify entries that need deeper testing.
- Update working papers for review points raised by the senior and the manager.
- Maintain the client's audit requirement list and keep the fieldwork status current.
- Learn and apply the relevant standards on auditing on each section worked.
Requirements
- CA Inter cleared, or a completed articleship, or B.Com with audit experience
- Working knowledge of accounting and audit basics
- Progress towards the CA qualification is an advantage
- 1 to 3 years in audit, or a completed CA articleship

What does an audit associate do?
An audit associate carries out audit procedures on an engagement under a senior. They test transactions and balances, vouch entries to source documents, prepare working papers, gather evidence and draft sections of the audit file. They flag exceptions to the senior and clear review points, working through a section largely on their own without yet leading the fieldwork.
What is the difference between an audit associate and an audit assistant?
An audit assistant is usually a junior who supports fieldwork with data collection, vouching and basic checks. An audit associate is a mid level auditor who can complete a section largely independently, prepare working papers to review standard and draft parts of the file. The associate needs less supervision and takes on harder areas.
What qualifications do you need to be an audit associate?
Most audit associates have cleared CA Inter, completed a CA articleship, or hold a B.Com with a few years of audit experience. Firms look for a solid grasp of accounting and audit basics, care with documentation and progress towards the CA qualification, which helps in moving up to senior.
