Frequently asked questions

What does a GST consultant do?

A GST consultant handles a client's indirect tax work. They file the monthly and annual GST returns, reconcile input tax credit against GSTR-2B, respond to notices, file refunds and advise on the GST treatment of transactions such as classification and place of supply. They keep the client compliant and protect their input tax credit.

What is the difference between a GST consultant and a tax consultant?

A GST consultant specialises in indirect tax under the goods and services tax law: returns, input credit, refunds and GST advisory. A tax consultant usually covers a wider range, including income tax, TDS and advance tax alongside GST. In larger firms the GST specialist focuses only on indirect tax, while a tax consultant is more of a generalist.

What qualifications do you need to be a GST consultant?

Most GST consultants hold a B.Com, CA Inter or a diploma in GST or taxation, with two to five years of hands on GST compliance and portal work. Firms value practical knowledge of returns, reconciliations and refunds over pure theory. The chartered accountancy qualification helps in moving up to a manager role.
