Job title: Principal Engineer
Department: Information Technology
Reports to: Director of Engineering
Location: [City], [office, branch or site]
About the role
A Principal Engineer is a senior individual contributor who sets technical direction across several teams without managing people. They take on the hardest cross-cutting problems, such as scaling a core service, cutting latency or untangling a fragile legacy system, and they write the design documents other engineers build from. In Indian product companies the role sits beside engineering managers and usually reports to a director or VP. A good Principal Engineer raises the technical bar across the group and leaves systems simpler than they found them.
Key responsibilities
- Identify the technical problems that most limit the business, such as scaling limits, reliability gaps or slow builds, and propose where to invest.
- Write design documents and RFCs for large changes, and run review meetings until the teams involved agree on the approach.
- Build prototypes and proofs of concept to test risky choices before teams commit to them.
- Write and review code for critical paths such as payments, search or data pipelines, setting patterns others follow.
- Lead deep investigations into severe production incidents and performance problems that cross team boundaries.
- Define standards for API design, observability, testing and data modelling together with other senior engineers.
- Review designs from senior engineers and technical leads across teams, and flag risks while they are still cheap to fix.
- Mentor senior engineers towards staff and principal level through pairing, design reviews and direct feedback.
- Advise directors and product heads on build versus buy decisions and the technical cost of roadmap choices.
- Represent the company's engineering at tech talks, open source projects or campus events when it helps hiring.
Requirements
- B.E. or B.Tech in Computer Science, or M.Tech
- Open source contributions, patents or published conference talks are an advantage
- 12+ years of hands-on software engineering, including several years owning the design of large production systems
KRAs and KPIs for a Principal Engineer
Key result areas for the appraisal form, each with a KPI you can measure every month or quarter.
| Key result area | How to measure it |
|---|---|
| Technical direction | Major design proposals written each half year, with at least 80 percent adopted by the teams involved |
| System performance | Services the engineer leads meet their agreed p99 latency and throughput targets every month |
| Incident reduction | Repeat incidents in their area falling quarter on quarter after root cause fixes |
| Design review | Critical designs reviewed within 2 working days, with no severity 1 defect traced to an approved design |
| Mentoring | At least three senior engineers mentored each year, with growth plans or promotions as evidence |
| Cross-team standards | Standards for APIs, logging and testing published and followed by every team in the group |
Skills and tools
Tools used day to day: IntelliJ IDEA or VS Code, Git, Kafka, PostgreSQL or MySQL, Redis, Prometheus and Grafana, async-profiler or pprof, Kubernetes.
Reporting line and career path
Next roles: Director of Engineering, Vice President Engineering, Chief Technology Officer
Interview questions for a Principal Engineer
- Design a notification system that sends 10 million messages a day across SMS, email and app push.
- Tell me about one of your designs that turned out wrong. How did you find out and what did you do?
- How do you get three teams to adopt a standard they did not ask for?
- A core API's p99 latency doubled after a release. How would you investigate?
- When would you rewrite a legacy service instead of refactoring it?
- How do you decide what not to work on at this level?

What does a principal engineer do?
A principal engineer is a very senior hands-on engineer who guides technical direction across several teams. They design and review large systems, write critical code, lead investigations into hard production problems, set engineering standards and mentor senior engineers. They usually do not manage people; their influence comes from expertise and the quality of their designs.
What is the difference between a principal engineer and an engineering manager?
An engineering manager is responsible for people: hiring, one-on-ones, performance and team delivery. A principal engineer is responsible for technical direction: architecture, standards and the hardest engineering problems. In many Indian product companies the two sit at a similar level, one on the management track and one on the individual contributor track.
How many years does it take to become a principal engineer?
Most principal engineers in India have 12 or more years of hands-on experience, moving through senior engineer, technical lead or staff roles first. Years alone are not enough. Companies promote to principal when an engineer has designed systems many teams depend on and has visibly changed how other engineers work.
