Frequently asked questions

What does a tax manager do in a CA firm?

A tax manager runs a portfolio of clients' direct and indirect tax work. They review income tax, TDS and GST returns, plan tax positions, handle notices and appeals, and keep every filing on the due date. They are the senior tax contact for clients and the reviewer under whom tax consultants and assistants work.

What is the difference between a tax manager and a tax consultant?

A tax consultant prepares computations, returns and reconciliations and drafts submissions. A tax manager reviews that work, owns the client relationship, plans positions, represents the client in assessments and answers for the whole portfolio's compliance. The consultant executes; the manager reviews, advises and carries the result.

What qualifications does a tax manager need?

Most tax managers are chartered accountants, though a CA Inter with strong hands on tax experience can reach the role in some firms. Current knowledge of income tax and GST law is essential, and a diploma in taxation or GST helps. Firms value the ability to review, advise and represent, not just to prepare returns.
