Frequently asked questions

What does a tax consultant do?

A tax consultant handles a set of clients' direct and indirect tax compliance and basic advisory. They prepare income tax computations and returns, file TDS and GST returns, work out advance tax, reconcile tax data and answer everyday client queries. They execute the tax work that a tax manager reviews and signs, keeping clients compliant and on time.

What is the difference between a tax consultant and a tax assistant?

A tax assistant supports the team with data entry, challans, document collection and basic reconciliations. A tax consultant prepares full computations and returns, handles TDS and GST filings, drafts notice replies and advises clients on routine matters. The consultant works more independently and owns a set of clients' compliance.

What qualifications do you need to be a tax consultant?

Most tax consultants hold a B.Com, CA Inter or a diploma in taxation, with two to four years of compliance and return filing experience. Practical knowledge of income tax, TDS and GST work on the portals matters most. The chartered accountancy qualification helps in moving up to a tax manager role.
