Where BPO overtime comes from
Most of it is unplanned, decided by the operations manager at 9 pm when the queue will not come down. That is exactly why rules matter. Agree in writing when stretching can be requested, who asks, how consent is recorded and how long a stretch can last, so the team leader on the floor is not negotiating it agent by agent in the middle of a spike.
- Stretch after shift end when the queue is above its threshold
- Weekly off working during a ramp-up or a client outage
- Holiday duty on festivals the client does not observe
- Extra hours during a new process launch before hiring catches up
Consent, the legal rate and hours
The OSH Code caps ordinary work at eight hours a day, with intervals, spread-over and weekly limits fixed by government notification. Anything beyond the prescribed hours is overtime, which needs the worker's consent and is paid at twice the ordinary wage rate. Check the notified limits before approving long stretches on night shifts. In ZeniaHR, no multiplier, whether for a normal day, a weekly off or a holiday, should sit below 2. Count overtime from shift end and leave the 30-minute minimum on, so a few minutes of wrap-up never turn into a payroll line. The working hours and overtime rules set out the limits.
Worked example: a stretch week
Vikram, a voice agent, has a monthly gross of ₹20,800. Divided over 26 days, that gives a gross day rate of ₹800, and ₹800 divided by 8 gives an hourly rate of ₹100. In a spike week he stays 1 hour 50 minutes after his shift on five days. ZeniaHR rounds each down to 1 hour 45 minutes, so the week counts 8 hours 45 minutes, or 8.75 hours. At a multiplier of 2 that is ₹100 x 8.75 x 2 = ₹1,750. He also works his Saturday weekly off for 8 hours, paid at ₹100 x 8 x 2 = ₹1,600. His overtime for the week comes to ₹3,350.
Approval, bulk actions and the cap
Each night ZeniaHR reads the day's punches and raises overtime lines on its own. The TL approves the lines for their team in My Team, then HR approves, and after a spike week HR can bulk approve or reject by department. Set a monthly cap per agent. When a process keeps hitting the cap, share the numbers with the operations manager and the client: the process needs more headcount or a revised service level, not more stretch from the same tired agents.
How to set it up in ZeniaHR
- Turn the overtime policy on for agents, measured from shift end, ignoring stays under half an hour and rounding the rest down to quarter hours.
- Set working day, weekly off and holiday multipliers at 2 or more, and choose pay as the default payout for agents.
- Require approval so team leaders confirm stretch hours before HR, and use bulk approve after spike weeks.
- Set a monthly overtime cap per agent that respects the notified weekly limits.
- Every month, go through approved overtime by process with operations before agreeing further stretch with the client.

Is overtime compulsory in a BPO?
No. The OSH Code treats hours beyond the prescribed limit as overtime, worked only with the worker's consent and paid at twice the ordinary wage rate. A BPO can ask agents to stretch during a spike, but it should record consent rather than assume it. A written overtime policy shared at induction avoids arguments on the floor when the queue is high.
How is overtime calculated for BPO agents?
Work out the hourly rate as the gross day rate divided by 8, then apply it to the approved hours at the multiplier. For an ₹800 day rate the hourly rate is ₹100, so 3 hours at 2x come to ₹600. ZeniaHR detects the hours from punches, applies the rounding in your policy and adds approved overtime to payroll as an earning.
What does stretching mean in a BPO?
Stretching means an agent staying logged in beyond the end of the shift, usually for 30 minutes to two hours, to help clear a queue that has built up. When it goes beyond the prescribed hours it is overtime: it needs the agent's consent and is paid at twice the ordinary wage rate where the rules apply.
