Where lab overtime comes from
Separate the avoidable from the unavoidable. An analyser breakdown is unavoidable, and so is a camp that overruns. A backlog on the evening run every single day is not; it is a staffing gap that overtime is quietly covering, and it belongs in the next hiring requisition rather than the overtime register.
- Monday and post-holiday backlogs
- Analyser breakdowns and repeat runs
- Camp samples arriving late in the day
- Fever season volumes in the monsoon
- Home collection slots booked beyond shift end
- Assessment preparation and document work after hours
Counting overtime from punches
ZeniaHR detects overtime every night from punches, counted either after shift end or beyond full-day hours, with a 30-minute minimum and rounding down to 15 minutes. A technician who stays 25 minutes to finish QC has no claim; one who stays 2 hours 50 minutes has 2 hours 45 minutes counted. The section head approves, then HR, and HR can bulk approve at month end. Where the policy allows, the technician picks cash or comp-off, and comp-off converts 4 overtime hours into a half day and 8 into a full day.
Worked example: an analyser breakdown
Sameer is a biochemistry technician on the 2 pm to 10 pm run, with a monthly gross of ₹27,000 and a gross day rate of ₹900 (₹27,000 over 30 days). The analyser fails at 7 pm, and the run finishes at 1:45 am. His overtime after shift end is 3 hours 45 minutes, or 3.75 hours. The hourly rate is ₹900 divided by 8, which is ₹112.50. Under the OSH Code, overtime is paid at twice the ordinary wage rate with the worker's consent, so his overtime pay is ₹112.50 x 3.75 x 2 = ₹843.75. See the overtime rules.
Caps protect the report
Tired technicians make validation mistakes, and a wrong report costs more than any overtime bill. Set a monthly overtime cap per person, watch overtime by department at each month close, and treat a section that hits the cap two months running as a hiring signal rather than a discipline issue. Keep the working day, weekly off and holiday multipliers at 2 or above, so no overtime hour is paid below the legal rate.
How to set it up in ZeniaHR
- Turn on the overtime policy, counted after shift end for rostered technicians and phlebotomists.
- Keep the 30-minute minimum and 15-minute rounding down, and require approval by the section head and then HR.
- Set working day, weekly off and holiday multipliers at 2 or higher.
- Offer payout as employee's choice, so staff can take comp-off at 4 hours for half a day and 8 hours for a full day.
- Set a monthly cap and review overtime by department at every month close.

Do lab technicians get overtime pay?
Yes, when they work beyond the prescribed hours. The OSH Code sets overtime at twice the ordinary wage rate, worked with the technician's consent. Labs often see overtime on night runs, Monday backlogs and during analyser breakdowns, and some let technicians choose comp-off instead of cash, with the choice recorded.
How is overtime calculated for a lab technician?
Start from the technician's gross day rate: one eighth of it is the hourly rate, which is then paid for each overtime hour at a multiplier of at least 2. A technician with a ₹900 day rate who stays 3.75 hours after a breakdown earns ₹112.50 x 3.75 x 2 = ₹843.75. ZeniaHR only counts time after the shift ends, in 15-minute steps rounded down.
Can overtime be given as comp-off in a lab?
Yes, if the technician prefers time off. ZeniaHR's overtime payout can be pay, comp-off or the employee's choice. Four hours of overtime become half a comp-off day and eight hours a whole day, and unused credits expire, so supervisors should plan it into quieter weeks after the rush.
