Training for e-commerce warehouses and delivery teams

Training in e-commerce is practical and repeated. Warehouse associates need safety, material handling and the SOPs for picking, packing and returns, and forklift operators need a certification that expires. Delivery associates need road safety, customer handling and cash rules. Everyone needs a refresher before the sale, when new SOPs and peak staff arrive together. Good training records show who is cleared for which task, and whose certification lapses before the peak.

Safety first on the warehouse floor

Every warehouse joiner should complete a safety induction before the first shift: safe lifting, pedestrian lanes near forklifts and pallet trucks, conveyor safety, fire exits and first aid points. Set it up as a mandatory classroom program with its hours and require a refresher every year. Forklift and reach truck operators need their own certification program with a validity in months; when it lapses, their enrolment shows as expired and they should stay off equipment until recertified.

SOP training for picking, packing and returns

Accuracy problems usually trace back to an SOP someone never learned: scanning the bin before the item, checking the invoice before sealing, grading a return. Build a short program for each SOP, delivered on the floor by the shift supervisor, and enrol people by department. When an SOP changes before a sale, run a refresher and confirm on each program's compliance screen that everyone finished it ahead of the sale, so nobody works the peak on the old process.

Delivery training: road, customer and cash

Delivery associates need a different track: road safety and helmet rules, handling the delivery app, doorstep etiquette, open-box delivery, return pickups, and COD cash handling and deposit. Blend a classroom session at the hub with a first day riding alongside an experienced associate. Record it as a blended program with hours, and refresh it every year or after any serious incident on the road.

Worked example: getting peak hires ready

A warehouse hiring 120 peak associates plans a 2-day induction of 8 hours a day, which is 16 hours per person, plus 4 hours of floor SOP training in the first week. That is 20 hours per associate and 2,400 training hours for the whole intake. With trainers able to take 30 people per classroom session, the induction needs four 2-day batches, which is why peak hiring has to finish two weeks before the sale, not two days before it.

How to set it up in ZeniaHR

  1. Create a mandatory warehouse safety induction as a classroom program with hours and a 12-month validity.
  2. Create forklift and reach truck certification programs with validity months, and enrol only trained operators.
  3. Build short SOP programs for picking, packing and returns, and enrol associates by department.
  4. Create a blended delivery training program covering road safety, customer handling and COD rules.
  5. Before each sale, check completion per program for SOP refreshers and expired certifications.

Frequently asked questions

What training do warehouse workers need?

A safety induction before the first shift, covering safe lifting, forklift lanes, conveyors, fire exits and first aid, plus training on the SOPs for their task, such as picking, packing or returns. Equipment operators need certification that is renewed on time. Refreshers before each sale keep new and returning staff on the same process.

How do you track forklift certification expiry?

Record the certification as a program with a validity in months, so each completion carries an expiry date. In ZeniaHR, an operator's enrolment turns to expired once the validity passes, and each program's compliance screen shows who may still operate. Check it before rostering operators, especially ahead of a sale.

What training do delivery associates get?

Road safety and helmet rules, using the delivery app, customer etiquette, open-box delivery, return pickups and COD cash handling. It usually combines a classroom session at the hub with a day riding alongside an experienced associate, and a refresher every year or after an incident.
