Payroll for jewellery showrooms

Jewellery payroll mixes steady salaries with incentives that must stay fair when the gold rate swings, and it often includes karigars paid by the piece. A clean process sets salary structures that meet the wage rule, pays incentives on measures staff control, adds karigar piece earnings and recoveries as monthly inputs, deducts PF, ESI and professional tax, and pays everyone by the 7th.

Salary structure for showroom staff

Get the structure right early, because a long-serving executive's gratuity is worked out on last drawn wages, and the wage definition decides what counts. The Code on Wages expects basic pay and DA to form at least half of total remuneration, with excess allowances added back into wages. For a senior sales executive on ₹26,000 a month, Basic plus DA of ₹13,000, HRA of ₹5,200 and Special allowance of ₹7,800 sits exactly on the line. Direct Payroll applies the company's split to each person's gross and keeps salary revisions in their history, so the record of last drawn wages is always there.

Incentives that do not swing with the gold rate

An incentive paid as a share of bill value rises when gold prices rise, even if the executive sells the same amount. Many showrooms therefore pay on making charges collected, grams sold or pieces sold. Worked example: a scheme pays 2 percent of making charges on gold and 0.5 percent of diamond jewellery value. Priya collects ₹1,85,000 in making charges and sells diamond jewellery worth ₹6,40,000 in a month, so her incentive is ₹3,700 + ₹3,200 = ₹6,900.

Work incentives out from the billing system each month, have the showroom manager sign the sheet, and key each executive's amount into payroll as an incentive input. Gold scheme executives can be paid on enrolments and on-time instalment collection in the same way.

Karigar pay

Karigars on monthly pay go through Direct Payroll like the showroom staff. For karigars paid by piece or by weight worked, total the month's earnings from the workshop register, enter them as an incentive input on top of any fixed base, and check that the total never falls below the minimum wage notified for your state. Keep the piece rates in writing and show each karigar their piece count before the run, so any dispute is settled before payroll, not after it.

Shortages, advances and statutory items

A stock shortage is not a payroll entry. Investigate first, record the findings and the employee's reply, and read the Code on Wages rules on deductions from wages before any recovery. Salary advances, common before weddings in staff families, go in as advance recovery. Each payslip shows the employee's PF, ESI and professional tax for the state, with the employer's EPS, EPF and ESI contributions calculated too. A month's salary has to reach staff by the 7th of the next month.

Frequently asked questions

How should jewellery sales staff incentives be calculated?

On measures the executive controls and that do not swing with the gold rate, such as making charges collected, grams sold or pieces sold, with separate rates for diamond and gold. Put the slabs in writing, calculate monthly from billing data, and pay the incentive as a separate payslip earning after the showroom manager signs off.

How are karigars paid in a jewellery business?

Either a monthly salary or by piece or weight worked, sometimes a base plus piece earnings. Monthly-paid karigars go through payroll like other staff. For piece-rated karigars, total the month's pieces from the workshop register, add the earnings as a payroll input, and make sure the total meets the notified minimum wage.

Can a jewellery showroom recover stock shortages from salary?

Only within what the law permits, and only after a proper inquiry. Check the deductions from wages allowed under the Code on Wages, record the investigation and the employee's response, and document any recovery. Many showrooms rely on insurance and tighter tray controls rather than wage recoveries.
