A normal day on two shifts
Take a showroom open from 10:30 am to 8:30 pm. An early shift, 10 am to 7 pm, handles the opening count; a late shift, 12:30 pm to 9:30 pm, covers the evening crowd and does the closing count and tray return. Each shift has a one-hour break, so working time stays at 8 hours. The two shifts overlap from 12:30 pm to 7 pm, when families usually come in. The stock controller and one manager must be present at every count, so spread them across both shifts through the week.
Counter cover and weekly offs
Each counter needs at least one trained person for every hour it is open, and the bridal and diamond counters usually need two in the evening. Give each person a personal weekly off on a quieter weekday, never on a Saturday, a Sunday or a muhurat day. If the showroom closes one day a week, make that the shift's weekly off instead. Check that the trained staff of any one counter do not share a weekly off, or that counter's trays stay locked all day.
Muhurat day timings
On Akshaya Tritiya or Dhanteras a showroom may open at 8 am and close at 11 pm. Two normal shifts cannot cover a 15-hour day, so plan a festival roster: a morning shift from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm for the opening count and morning buyers, an evening shift from 2:30 pm to 11:30 pm for the rush and the closing count, and an overlap in the afternoon as the crowd builds. Assign it in bulk for the festival dates weeks ahead. Anyone asked to cover both shifts is working overtime, which needs their consent and is paid at twice the ordinary wage.
Workshop shifts and counter swaps
Karigars keep a fixed day shift, often 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, with their weekly off on the market closing day, and move to longer days only when festival and wedding orders pile up. Keep the workshop on its own shift in the roster. On the showroom side, swaps go through the app: the executive proposes a trade with a colleague, for one date or two, the colleague agrees, and the showroom manager and HR approve. The roster changes only then, so the manager issues trays to the person who is actually there.
How to set it up in ZeniaHR
- In Shifts & Roster, create the opening and closing shifts, the festival morning and evening shifts and the workshop day shift, each with breaks and grace.
- If the showroom closes one day a week, set that day in the shift's weekly off pattern; if it opens daily, give personal weekly offs.
- Assign the festival roster in bulk for Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and the wedding season weekends, several weeks ahead.
- Read the day grid counter by counter before publishing, so no counter is left without a trained person.
- Route shift swaps through the mobile app; they take effect only after the showroom manager and HR have both approved.

What are typical working hours in a jewellery showroom?
Showrooms commonly open from about 10:30 am to 8:30 pm, with staff arriving around 30 minutes earlier for the opening count and the closing team staying back for the tray return. Two overlapping nine-hour shifts, each with a one-hour break, keep working time at eight hours. Festival days run longer and need their own roster.
How do jewellery showrooms staff festival days?
With a festival roster planned weeks ahead: an early shift for the opening count and morning buyers, a late shift for the evening rush and closing count, and both teams overlapping in the afternoon. Leave is frozen, overtime is agreed in advance with each person's consent, and karigars are scheduled to finish orders before the day.
Should karigars work the same shifts as showroom staff?
No. Karigars work in the workshop on a steady day shift, often starting earlier and finishing before the showroom closes, and their busy weeks come before the festival while orders are finished. Keep them on their own shift and weekly off, and plan their overtime around order deadlines.
