Where the extra hours come from
Most of this overtime can be planned. The muhurat calendar is known a year ahead, stock audits are scheduled, and bridal orders arrive with a delivery date. The showroom manager should name the people staying back, get each one's agreement and let HR know in advance. Overtime that appears without a plan usually means a counter was short-staffed, and then the roster, not the overtime policy, needs fixing.
- Extended timings on muhurat days
- Wedding season weekends with families shopping late
- Annual or quarterly stock audits after closing
- Karigars finishing bridal and festival orders
- Exhibitions and trunk shows in other cities
Two festival nights, worked out
What does a senior executive earn for two long festival nights? Meera is on a monthly gross of ₹26,000, and her showroom uses a 26-day month, so her gross day rate is ₹1,000 and her hourly rate ₹125. On Dhanteras she stays 3 hours 40 minutes past her 7 pm shift end, which rounds down to 3.5 hours. The next evening she stays 2 hours 20 minutes, which rounds down to 2.25 hours. Together that is 5.75 hours, and at a multiplier of 2 her overtime comes to ₹125 x 5.75 x 2 = ₹1,437.50. If either day is a listed holiday in your calendar, the holiday multiplier you set applies to it instead.
Approval before payroll
Every night ZeniaHR reads the punches and raises overtime where hours run past the rule you chose, ignoring anything under 30 minutes and rounding the rest down to 15 minutes. The showroom manager decides each claim in My Team, then HR, and HR can bulk approve a whole showroom's claims after a festival. Approved hours become a payroll earning equal to the hours times the multiplier times one eighth of the gross day rate, so festival overtime lands in the same month's salary. A monthly cap per person keeps festival overtime from turning into a standing arrangement.
Karigars and comp-off
Karigars on monthly pay are paid overtime exactly like showroom staff when they work past their shift to finish orders. For karigars paid by the piece, more pieces already means more pay, so agree in writing how extra hours are treated and check the rules for piece-rated workers with your adviser. Where staff would rather rest after the festival, the payout can be comp-off or left to the employee's choice, each 4 approved hours making half a day of comp-off and 8 making a full day, with multipliers kept at 2 or above.
How to set it up in ZeniaHR
- Switch on the overtime policy and count it after shift end, so the closing count and festival late hours are captured.
- Make approval compulsory, so no overtime reaches payroll without the showroom manager's decision; the 30-minute minimum filters out short overruns.
- Enter working day, weekly off and holiday multipliers of 2 or more, and cap the hours per person each month.
- Decide whether overtime is paid in money, in comp-off or as each person prefers; comp-off credits half a day for 4 hours and a full day for 8.
- After each festival or stock audit, bulk approve the showroom's claims so they reach that month's payroll.

Do jewellery showroom staff get overtime on festival days?
Yes, when they work beyond their rostered hours. The OSH Code puts overtime at double the ordinary wage, and staff must agree to it first. On a 15-hour muhurat day, plan two shifts so most staff work normal hours, and pay overtime to those who cover both.
How is overtime calculated for jewellery staff?
Start from the gross day rate, take one eighth of it as the hourly rate, and multiply by the rounded overtime hours and the multiplier. For an executive on ₹26,000 with a 26-day month, the hourly rate is ₹125, so 5.75 hours at 2x comes to ₹1,437.50. Once a claim is approved, ZeniaHR uses the same formula to post the earning to payroll.
How is overtime handled for karigars paid by piece?
Agree the rule in writing. Piece-rated karigars already earn more for more pieces, so decide whether extra hours on rush orders earn anything further, and check the legal position for piece-rated workers with your adviser. Karigars on monthly pay are handled like any other employee, with overtime at twice the ordinary wage rate.
