Holiday calendar for textile and garment units

A garment unit's holiday calendar has to fit a workforce from many states and a shipment schedule set by foreign buyers. Tiruppur closes for Pongal, NCR units for Diwali and Holi, and workers from Bihar and Jharkhand want Chhath. Mills that run three shifts keep going through most holidays. A good calendar fixes the main holidays early, adds optional days that reflect where workers come from, and plans any holiday work before shipments without surprises.

Holidays for a workforce from many states

A Gurugram export house may employ operators from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha and Jharkhand. National holidays and the state's festival holidays are fixed, and optional holidays let workers mark Chhath, Durga Puja, Rath Yatra or Eid without closing the factory. Set a yearly pick limit and collect choices early, so supervisors know which lines will be short on which days and can plan cover.

Holidays close to ship dates

Buyers set ship dates months ahead, and sometimes one falls right after Diwali or Pongal. Plan production so the peak ends before the festival where you can. If the unit must work on a holiday, announce it weeks ahead, ask for volunteers, and pay the holiday work at the rate your policy sets or give a compensatory day. Hours beyond the prescribed limit are overtime, done with consent and paid at twice the ordinary wage rate, and buyer auditors read these records closely.

Mills: three shifts through the holidays

Spinning mills often run through festivals, because stopping and restarting frames loses output. Crews on duty on a holiday get holiday pay or a comp-off as your policy says. Rotate holiday duty so the same crew does not work Diwali every year, and publish the duty roster together with the holiday calendar.

Weekly offs and cluster practice

In some textile clusters the weekly off falls on a fixed weekday, not Sunday, by local custom. Use it as the unit's weekly off pattern, and make sure the holiday list and the weekly off do not collide unnoticed. When a festival falls on the weekly off day, decide in advance whether a substitute holiday is given, and say so in the calendar so workers are not left guessing.

How to set it up in ZeniaHR

  1. In Holiday Calendars, add national and state festival holidays for each unit, plus optional holidays for your workers' home-state festivals.
  2. Cap optional holiday picks per worker per year, and read the report of who picked which day before planning lines.
  3. Set holiday multipliers in the Overtime policy, or choose comp-off, for crews and lines that work on holidays.
  4. Rotate mill holiday duty across crews in Shifts & Roster so no crew works every major festival.
  5. Set the unit's weekly off pattern per shift, including a fixed weekday off where your cluster follows one.
  6. Announce the holiday calendar and any pre-shipment holiday working on the Company Wall, with acknowledgement required.

Frequently asked questions

How do garment factories choose festival holidays?

They start with the national holidays and the state's notified festival holidays, then add optional holidays matching their workers' home states, such as Chhath, Durga Puja or Rath Yatra. A yearly pick limit and early collection of choices let supervisors plan lines around each optional day.

Can a garment unit ask workers to work on a holiday before a shipment?

It can ask, but announce it early, seek volunteers, and reward the work as your policy says, with holiday pay or a compensatory day. Hours past the prescribed limit count as overtime: they need the worker's consent and earn twice the ordinary wage rate. Buyer audits check these records closely.

Do spinning mills work on festivals?

Many do, because stopping and restarting frames loses output. Crews on duty receive holiday pay or comp-off under the mill's policy. Rotate holiday duty across crews from year to year, so the same people do not miss Diwali or Pongal every time, and publish the duty roster with the calendar.
