Who uses it
How the holiday list drives attendance, leave and payroll
Every holiday you save is read in three places. Attendance treats the date as a holiday for the people it applies to, so nobody is marked absent on Republic Day. The leave engine uses it for the sandwich rule, where each leave type decides whether holidays count like weekends. Direct Payroll pays holidays according to the holiday pay setting in the deduction policy. Work done on a holiday can earn comp-off or be paid at the holiday rate set in the overtime policy.
Setting up the year in one sitting
Many HR teams publish next year's list in December. Load it from Excel through Data Import, or add holidays one at a time on the Holiday Calendars page. Mark fixed-date holidays to repeat every year so they carry over by themselves, and add festivals whose dates move each year separately. Then scope regional holidays to their branches, set the optional pick limit, and use the Check a person tab to confirm a sample employee from each location sees the right year.
- Every holiday sits in one of six categories, from Public Holiday and National to Regional and Company.
- Each holiday applies to chosen branches and departments, or to everyone when both lists are empty.
- Optional holidays count only for the people who pick them, up to a yearly limit of 2 by default.
- Archived holidays stay on record and can be restored.
What employees see
In My Self-Service and the app, each employee sees the holidays for the year that apply to their branch and department, and nothing else. Optional holidays show with a pick button until the person reaches the limit, and past dates are locked. This one filtered list answers the question HR hears every week, is Friday a holiday for us, without anyone checking a spreadsheet.

Can different branches have different holiday lists?
Yes. ZeniaHR keeps one company holiday list, and each holiday can apply to chosen branches and departments. A regional holiday for the Kolkata office can apply there only, while national holidays apply to everyone. Each employee sees and is paid by the holidays that match their own branch and department.
Can I import our holiday list from Excel?
Yes. Data Import accepts a holiday list from an Excel or CSV file with automatic column matching and a check of every row before anything is saved. You can also add holidays one at a time on the Holiday Calendars page and export the finished list as CSV for notice boards.
Are holidays paid in Direct Payroll?
By default, yes. The payroll deduction policy has a holiday pay setting, paid or unpaid, and Direct Payroll counts holidays as paid days when it is set to paid. An employee who works on a holiday can earn comp-off or holiday overtime, depending on your leave and overtime settings.
What is the difference between a public holiday and an optional holiday?
A public holiday is a day off for everyone it applies to. An optional holiday counts only for the employees who pick it, up to the yearly limit HR sets. On an optional holiday the office stays open, and only the people who picked the day are treated as on holiday.
