About the role
An SAP Basis Consultant is the system administrator for SAP landscapes. They install and upgrade SAP systems, look after the HANA or other database underneath, run transports, handle client copies and system refreshes, apply support packs and kernel patches, and keep performance and availability healthy. The role reports to the ERP manager or infrastructure manager at SAP customers, SAP partners and IT services firms. A good Basis Consultant keeps SAP running through month-end, plans upgrades carefully and keeps the transport landscape in perfect order.
Key responsibilities
- Install and configure S/4HANA, ECC, BW and Solution Manager systems on Linux or Windows.
- Administer SAP HANA or other databases, including backups, log management and memory monitoring.
- Manage the transport landscape, import transports on schedule and resolve transport errors.
- Run system refreshes and client copies for QA and training systems, including all post-copy steps.
- Apply support packages, kernel updates, SAP Notes and security patches under tested plans.
- Monitor system health through standard transactions and Solution Manager, and act on work process, spool and update errors.
- Tune system parameters, memory and background jobs ahead of month-end and year-end peaks.
- Set up system connections, RFC destinations, SAP router and single sign-on.
- Plan and carry out upgrades, S/4HANA conversions and cloud migrations with project teams.
- Support DR drills, internal and external audits, and the annual SAP licence measurement.

What does an SAP Basis consultant do?
An SAP Basis consultant administers SAP systems. They install and upgrade SAP, manage the HANA database, import transports, refresh test systems, apply patches and SAP Notes, monitor performance, set up system connections and support upgrades and S/4HANA conversions. They keep SAP available for the business, especially during closing periods.
What is the difference between SAP Basis and SAP ABAP?
SAP Basis is the administration side: installing, running, patching and tuning SAP systems and their databases. SAP ABAP is the development side: writing custom programs, reports and interfaces. Basis consultants make sure the platform runs, and ABAP developers build on top of it.
Is SAP HANA knowledge required for a Basis consultant?
