Hire the sales floor before the festive rush
A consultant hired in October is still learning the models on Dhanteras. Open requisitions in July and August, so new hires finish product training and shadow a senior for a few weeks before Navratri. Plan a second round in November for the December and March pushes. Keep a requisition per outlet, so a rural outlet does not lose its opening to the main showroom's larger team.
ITIs and the technician pipeline
Technicians come from ITIs and diploma colleges, from other workshops and through referrals from your own technicians. Build a relationship with two or three local ITIs, take trainees each year, and hire the ones who did well when they finish. Service advisors often grow from senior technicians who communicate well, which is cheaper and more reliable than hiring advisors from outside.
Screening that includes a drive and a trade test
For sales, check the driving licence before anything else, then take the candidate on a short drive in a demo car with the team leader and ask for a two-minute pitch on any model they know. For technicians, a trade test at a bay, diagnosing a planted fault or completing a step of a periodic service, shows more than any interview. Drivers need a licence check, a road test and police verification before the offer.
- Sales consultant: licence check, drive and product pitch
- Service advisor: role-play explaining an estimate
- Technician: trade test at a bay
- Driver: licence check, road test and police verification
Decide in days, not weeks
Good consultants and technicians hold several offers in the festive months. Offer interview slots with the sales manager or works manager within two days of the application, and send the offer the same day as the final interview. Track pending offers daily in August and September. A requisition that stays open for a month usually means the offer is below the market, not that candidates are scarce.

When should car dealerships hire for the festive season?
In July and August, so new sales consultants finish product training and shadow senior colleagues before Navratri. A second round in November prepares for the December and March pushes. Hiring in October leaves new consultants learning the models during the busiest days of the year.
How do dealerships test technician candidates?
With a trade test at a bay: diagnosing a planted fault, completing part of a periodic service or explaining a repair. It shows skill and working habits better than an interview. Add a reference check with a previous works manager and a check of ITI or diploma certificates.
What checks are needed before hiring a dealership driver?
A valid driving licence for the vehicle class, a road test with a supervisor, police verification and a reference from a previous employer. Drivers handle customer vehicles and keys, so complete the checks before the offer and record the licence expiry date.
