Sourcing through people you can check
Referrals from trusted staff are the main source in many showrooms, because the referrer's reputation is part of the check. Other sources are experienced executives from other jewellers, hotel and retail staff with strong customer skills, and gemology course graduates for the diamond counter. Put the careers page link on your website and give it to referrers, so every candidate applies through the same form and every application sits on the same pipeline board.
Screening for the counter
For experienced executives and managers, the resume match score gives a first sort, with a breakdown that separates skills from experience, role fit and education. The interview then tests product knowledge, the patience to show forty pieces to a family choosing a wedding set, and honesty under pressure. Ask the showroom manager and a senior executive to interview together, and write their observations into the candidate's screening notes.
- Explain the difference between 22 karat and 18 karat gold
- How would you read a hallmark and HUID on a piece?
- A family wants to exchange old gold: what do you check first?
- How do you handle a customer who wants a bigger discount on making charges?
- Which languages do you speak with customers?
Trade tests for karigars and stock roles
A karigar's skill shows at the bench. Ask candidates to set stones, repair a chain or finish a piece while the workshop head watches for precision and material loss. For stock controllers, test weighing, entries in the stock register and reconciling a tray against its list. Record what you saw in screening notes, so the decision rests on the test and not only on who recommended the person.
Hiring before the season
Raise requisitions in August for Diwali and in September for the wedding season, so joiners finish verification and training before the rush. Let candidates choose from the interview slots you offer, put each offer on the online accept or decline page, and shift those who accept straight into onboarding. The funnel and pending offers in recruitment analytics show whether hiring will finish in time, while there is still time to act.

What qualities should a jewellery sales executive have?
Honesty first, then product knowledge of gold purity, hallmarks, diamonds and gemstones, patience with families making big decisions, clear speech in the customers' languages, and comfort with long festival days. Experience at another jeweller helps, but a strong customer service background plus training can work well.
How do you test a karigar before hiring?
With a bench test in your workshop: stone setting, repair or finishing work on a sample piece while the workshop head watches for precision, speed and material loss. Record the result, check references from previous workshops, and complete verification before any gold is issued against the karigar's name.
When should jewellery showrooms hire for Diwali and wedding season?
Start in August for Diwali and in September for the wedding season. Joiners need time for verification, product training and supervised counter work before they handle festival crowds alone, so hiring in October is usually too late.
