Holiday calendar for pharmacy chains

Pharmacy stores are expected to stay open when everything else is shut, so a chain's holiday calendar is mostly about who works and how they are compensated. Head office and sometimes the warehouse close on listed holidays, stores run full or short hours, and each state brings its own festivals. A good calendar separates these groups clearly and is published before the year starts.

Three holiday patterns in one chain

Head office follows a normal list: national holidays, state festival holidays and a couple of optional ones. The warehouse closes on a few of those days and dispatches double the day before. Stores stay open, sometimes with shorter hours on Diwali night or Holi morning. For stores, decide holiday by holiday: if staff who work it should earn comp-off, apply the holiday to the store departments and roster the team; if it is an ordinary trading day for stores, leave them out of it.

Holiday duty and comp-off

On a major festival a store might run with its pharmacist and one assistant instead of the usual five people. Everyone rostered that day earns a comp-off from the worked holiday, with an expiry such as 60 days, and those rostered off enjoy the paid holiday. Keep it fair across the year: a person who worked Diwali should get Holi or Eid off where possible, and the store manager should note festival duty on the roster so next year's choices are easy.

State-wise lists for a multi-state chain

A chain in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana has Ugadi, Pongal and Bonalu on different dates and with different weight. Create the holidays once for the year, tag each regional holiday to the right branches, and mark recurring yearly ones. Check each state's Shops and Establishments and festival holiday rules for the number of paid holidays store staff get. Holidays in ZeniaHR also feed payroll and the leave sandwich rules, so a wrong branch tag becomes a wrong salary.

Optional holidays for store staff

Optional holidays let staff mark their own festival without closing the store. Keep a pick limit of two or three a year, ask staff to choose in January, and let store managers go through the optional holiday picks report before they roster those weeks. Pharmacists' picks matter most, because each one needs relief cover booked well in advance.

How to set it up in ZeniaHR

  1. Create holidays in Holiday Calendars by category, tagging regional ones to the branches in each state.
  2. Apply holidays to head office and warehouse departments, and to store departments only where holiday work should earn comp-off.
  3. Create short-hours festival shifts and roster the minimum store team, pharmacist first.
  4. Set an optional holiday pick limit and review the picks store by store in January.
  5. Set comp-off expiry in the leave rules so festival comp-offs are used within weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Do pharmacy store staff get holidays?

Yes. They get paid holidays under their state's festival holiday rules and the chain's policy, even though stores stay open. Staff rostered off enjoy the holiday, and staff who work it usually earn comp-off or extra pay. The roster decides who works each festival, ideally in rotation.

How are pharmacy staff compensated for working on festivals?

Many chains give a comp-off for each worked holiday, credited automatically and valid for a set number of days. Some pay holiday wages instead or let staff choose. Whatever the rule, publish it with the holiday list in January so store teams know what working Diwali earns them.

Does a pharmacy warehouse follow the same holidays as stores?

Usually not. Stores stay open on most holidays, while the warehouse closes on a few and dispatches extra stock the day before so shelves stay full. Tag each holiday to the departments that actually observe it, so warehouse staff get the day off without marking store staff absent.
