Mandatory programs for every store
These programs protect customers, cash and people, so they cannot wait for a quiet month. Run them in the joiner's first week and then as refreshers. Classroom sessions of 30 to 45 minutes before opening suit stores, while theory modules can be online. POSH awareness belongs on the list because every workplace with 10 or more employees must constitute an Internal Committee under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013, and store staff need to know who sits on it and how to reach them.
- Induction: store standards, grooming and customer service basics
- Billing, cash handling and counterfeit note checks for anyone on a till
- Fire safety, evacuation and the mall's emergency drill
- First aid for at least one person on each shift
- POSH awareness and how to reach the Internal Committee
- Loss prevention: tagging, trial room rules and bag checks
Product training at every season change
Product knowledge ages quickly in retail. A fashion chain launches a new collection each season, and an electronics chain gets new models every few months. Brand trainers or category managers run short sessions, often online first and then a demonstration on the floor. Record each launch as a program in Learning with its hours, enrol the store teams, and mark completion, so the area manager can see before the launch weekend which stores are ready to sell and which still need a visit.
Validity, refreshers and audit records
Give programs that need refreshing a validity in months, for example 12 months for fire safety and cash handling and 24 months for first aid, or whatever your trainer's certificate states. When HR marks a program complete, ZeniaHR issues a certificate number with an expiry date, and expired is one of the enrolment statuses, so lapsed certificates are easy to find. The compliance view per program shows who has completed, who is in progress and who has expired, which is what a mall safety audit or an internal audit usually asks to see.
How to set it up in ZeniaHR
- In Learning, create each program with its mode, hours, mandatory flag and validity in months, starting with induction, billing and fire safety.
- Enrol every store joiner in the mandatory programs during onboarding, and enrol store teams in each season's product program.
- Mark completion after each session, so certificate numbers and expiry dates are issued for the store's records.
- Check the compliance view per program before audits and before festival season, and re-enrol anyone whose certificate has expired.
- Post training schedules to store branches on the Company Wall, and require acknowledgement for changes to store policies.

What training do retail store employees need?
Every store employee needs induction on store standards, customer service and fire safety, plus POSH awareness. Anyone on a till needs billing, cash handling and counterfeit note training, and at least one person per shift should hold a first aid certificate. Add product training at every season launch and loss prevention for staff on the floor and in trial rooms.
How often should retail staff get fire safety training?
Plan a refresher at least once a year, and join the mall's fire drill whenever it runs. Set the validity of your fire safety program to 12 months so certificates lapse and people are re-enrolled on time. Your local fire authority and your mall may ask for more, so check their requirements for each location.
How can a retail chain track training across many stores?
Keep every program in one system with enrolments per employee, and read completion store by store. In ZeniaHR, each program has a compliance view showing who has completed, who is in progress and who has expired, and completed training issues a certificate number with an expiry date. Area managers can then chase the stores that are behind before an audit or launch.
