Recruitment for textile and garment units

Garment units hire all year, because operators move between factories for a small difference in piece rates and migrants go home for festivals. Before a big order, a unit may need 50 operators in two weeks. The key test is at the machine: can the candidate sew a clean seam at speed on the machine the line needs? Good recruitment keeps referral and skilling institute pipelines open, tests on the machine, checks age proof before anything else, and brings joiners onto the line quickly.

Where operators come from

Referrals from current operators bring people from the same villages and towns, who often stay longer because they have friends on the floor. Apparel training institutes and skilling programmes, including those under the Ministry of Textiles' Samarth scheme, supply trained freshers. Walk-ins at the gate work for experienced operators, especially after festivals when many workers change factories.

A machine trial, not an interview

A tailor's skill shows in minutes at the machine. Give the candidate a trial on the machine type the line needs, single-needle, overlock or flatlock, with a simple operation such as a side seam or a hem. Watch speed, seam quality and machine handling, and grade the result on a simple scale. A cutting master's trial is marking and cutting a lay; a checker's trial is finding defects planted in finished garments.

Age proof before anything else

Buyer audits treat an underage worker as a zero-tolerance issue, so check age proof before the trial, not after the offer. Accept Aadhaar or a birth or school certificate, compare the photo with the person, and keep a copy in the file. If documents do not match, or the candidate looks too young for the stated age, stop until it is resolved. The date of birth recorded here carries through to the appointment letter every employee must receive.

Bulk hiring for a big order

When an order needs a new line, count operators by machine type from the line plan, then hire in batches of 10 to 15 so trials, age checks, onboarding and machine allocation keep pace. Start with a core of experienced operators for the difficult operations and fill simpler ones with trained freshers. Hire a few more than the line plan needs, because some joiners will not last the first month.

How to set it up in ZeniaHR

  1. Raise one requisition per line or machine type in the Recruitment Hub, with the number of operators needed.
  2. Share the careers page link with referrers and training institutes; walk-in candidates can apply on their phones at the gate.
  3. Record age proof checks and machine trial grades as screening notes, and stop any candidate whose age cannot be verified.
  4. Move passed candidates to Offer on the pipeline board, using online accept or decline for staff roles.
  5. Move selected candidates into onboarding the same day so documents, bank details and appointment letters follow at once.
  6. Track open requisitions and the funnel in recruitment analytics throughout a bulk hiring drive.

Frequently asked questions

How do garment factories test tailors before hiring?

With a machine trial. The candidate sews a simple operation, such as a side seam or hem, on the machine type the line needs, and the supervisor grades speed, seam quality and machine handling. Cutting masters mark and cut a lay, and checkers find planted defects. The trial shows far more than an interview.

Why do garment units check age proof before hiring?

Because buyer social audits treat any underage worker as a critical finding, and records must show every worker is an adult. Check Aadhaar or a birth or school certificate before the trial, compare the photo with the person, and keep a copy on file. Do not proceed where documents do not match.

Where can garment units find trained operators?

The main sources are referrals from current operators, apparel training and skilling institutes, walk-ins after festivals when workers change factories, and former operators who left on good terms. Staying in touch with training institutes near your cluster gives a steady flow of trained freshers for the simpler operations.
