What are the duties of a school principal?
A school principal leads teaching, staff and students, keeps the campus safe, handles parents and complaints, manages the budget and keeps the school compliant with its affiliating board. The principal also recruits teachers, approves the timetable, observes lessons, chairs key committees and reports to the management on results, admissions and incidents.
What qualifications do you need to become a principal in India?
Most schools expect a postgraduate degree with a B.Ed, and many prefer an M.Ed. Candidates usually need 12 or more years of teaching, including time as a vice principal or section head. Each affiliating board sets its own eligibility norms for principals, so check the current rules of your board before advertising the post.
What is the difference between a principal and a vice principal?
The principal is accountable for the whole school and takes the final decisions on staff, students, parents and budget. The vice principal runs daily operations under the principal: timetable, substitution, discipline, exam arrangements and teacher attendance. When the principal is away, the vice principal acts in charge.
Who does a school principal report to?
A principal reports to the school's management, usually the School Director, the manager of the trust or society, or the chairman. In a school group, the principal may also have a dotted line to a central academic head for curriculum and training decisions.
