A Shift Manager is the senior person in charge of the whole plant during a shift, most common in continuous process plants and large factories that run round the clock. They coordinate production, maintenance, quality and utilities for the shift, take the decisions that cannot wait for the day team, and hand over a stable plant to the next shift. Key responsibilities
- Take the handover from the outgoing shift manager, walk the critical areas and confirm the status of equipment, stocks and open safety permits.
- Brief the shift in-charges of each section on targets, priorities, pending issues and manpower at the start of the shift.
- Coordinate production, maintenance, quality and utility teams during the shift so breakdowns and quality holds are handled quickly.
- Authorize work permits for hot work, confined space entry and electrical isolation during the shift, following plant safety procedure.
- Decide on line stoppages, product changeovers or rework during the shift, within the authority given by the production manager.
- Respond first to emergencies such as fire, gas leaks, spills or injuries, and lead the response until senior managers arrive.
- Move manpower between sections when absenteeism or breakdowns disturb the shift plan.
- Record shift output, consumption, downtime and incidents in the shift log and the ERP before handover.
- Escalate major events to the production manager or plant manager as laid down in the escalation matrix.
- Hand the plant to the next shift with a clear written summary of open issues.

- Diploma in Engineering with long shift experience is accepted in many plants
